Cardea is a Dax's aunt and a resident of Fort Tarsis. She is in a relationship with Commander Vule. The gossip of their relationship spread throughout the fort.[1]
Gameplay
Ten years prior, Cardea and her caravan was lost in the Emerald Abyss at the same time the Freelancer went into the Heart of Rage. Her niece, Dax, requests the Freelancer to help find her journal. In so doing, they chase her turncoat mercenary, Talon, to a Shaper ruin, where they open a gateway that releases Cardea and her caravan.
Later at Fort Tarsis, Cardea describes her ordeal compared to wandering in a twilight fog, from which she experienced her past, present and future. She was then interrupted by Lord Roye, who was seeking Cardea's hand in marriage as she was fifth in line for the throne; due to the rescue of multiple claimants from the Emerald Abyss, the line of succession had been altered, bumping Dax to twelfth place. He then offered her a ride home to Antium on his strider, only for Dax and the Freelancer to mention that his strider caught on fire, forcing him to leave to investigate, leaving his bouquet in Cardea's hand. Getting back to the subject at hand, Cardea reveals she saw a vision of the Freelancer achieving a huge change for all Freelancers. Sadly, she can't provide any details as her memories are fading since being freed.
Further interactions with Cardea revealed that her memories are confused, as she recalls possible past or futures that aren't even real, such as mistaking that she studied in Heliost instead of Antium, or that Owen remains the Freelancer's cypher instead of Faye, or that she even had a history with Commander Vule. Matti, Erryl and Sumner theorize that she was stuck in a temporal reality.
